R.A. 8293

As a human being, it is my responsibility to know my rights and as a Filipino I should be responsible in knowing most, if not all, of my rights under Philippine laws, statutes and codes. One of those rights that I should be familiar with is the Intellectual Property Code also known as R.A. 8293. The IP Code protects not only my creative ideas and interests but also those of others. This law was passed to ensure that creators will have the right to own, produce and reproduce their creations and at the same time penalize those who will use their creations without proper credit or payment.

Sharing details and information about intellectual property and intellectual property rights is very important, especially now that everything can be shared online. There are several ways for me to support or help with the information dissemination of the Intellectual Property Code or R.A. 8293. One of those ways is by informing people through an article or a blogpost, like the one I am currently doing right now. Articles or blogposts that are posted and shared online are readily accessible by readers as long as you have an internet connection. As previously mentioned in one of my posts, one of the characteristics of the internet is permanence. When your post is uploaded, it will already travel the World Wide Web and it will be very difficult to take it down. Whatever has been posted will stay online. It will always re-surface.

Another way is to integrate or incorporate the subject when discussing situations or ideas that are related to it with friends, colleagues and others. When we educate people, we help them become better citizens. If people are informed, they have the capacity to decide wisely. There are a lot more ways to help and support the dissemination of information regarding intellectual property, we just need to be knowledgeable of the subject matter and assertive when it comes to sharing the information.

We have to remind ourselves time and again that in this age where information is the most sought after commodity, an informed citizen is an empowered citizen.
